Quote: "The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine has deployed satellites to reconnoitre the locations of about 150 enemy hotspots. This became possible thanks to cooperation with the Serhiy Prytula Foundation, which provided Ukrainian intelligence officers with the ICEYE satellite, as well as contractual access to the database of SAR satellites."
Details: The defence intelligence has reported that the "people’s satellite" has helped uncover and confirm the location of nearly 2,600 pieces of Russian military equipment, including tanks, self-propelled artillery units, armoured vehicles, helicopters, Iskander, S-300 and Pantsir-S1 missile systems, and radars. The satellite also helped detect Russian pontoon crossings, ships and boats, and tents.
The intelligence explained that the satellite helped to effectively determine the locations of concealed deployments of Russian forces.
Background:
- The Serhiy Prytula Foundation, a Ukrainian charitable foundation fundraising for Ukraine’s military and humanitarian needs, has raised UAH600 million [approximately US$16,000,000 – ed.] to purchase access to a database of satellite images for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This deal was closed with the funds raised by the People’s Bayraktar project on 22-24 June 2022 by the Serhiy Prytula Charity Foundation in cooperation with blogger Ihor Lachenkov. The Baykar company decided to donate three Bayraktar TB-2 UAVs for free, allowing the foundation to use the funds to purchase the satellite. Prytula explained that "This isn’t just one satellite. It gives us access to the entire database of ISI satellite images, and we have been able to purchase access for more than a year."
- The Serhiy Prytula Foundation has later explained that the ICEYE satellite will remain under Ukraine’s ownership for the rest of its lifetime in orbit.
- ICEYE satellites can capture images of the Earth under any weather conditions.
