Details: Journalists compared the new photos of the Ukrainian cities with the NASA Worldview satellite images made at the same time on 6 February 2022, before the beginning of the full-scale invasion by Russia and its large-scale missile attacks on Ukraine.

Background:

  • On 23 November, Russia launched another large-scale missile attack on critical infrastructure facilities in Ukraine. Ukrainian air defence systems shot down 51 Russian cruise missiles out of 67, as well as 5 kamikaze drones.
  • The attack led to temporary power outages at all nuclear power plants, most thermal and hydroelectric power plants. Electricity transmission facilities were also hit. A big part of Ukraine was left without electricity; there were also heat and water supply shortages. These problems are gradually being solved at the moment.
  • Ten people are known to have been killed in the 23 November attacks.
