Power supply to ZNPP restored. Rivne, Pivdennoukrainsk and Khmelnytskyi NPP restart power units

After a shutdown following the large-scale Russian missile attack on 23 November, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) received an auxiliary power supply from the Ukrainian energy network. Start-up operations are being carried out for the power units at the Rivne, Pivdennoukrainsk and Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plants.

The emergency protection system was activated at the Rivne, Pivdennoukrainsk and Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plants on 23 November due to a frequency drop in the energy system as a result of damage to the energy infrastructure. All power units at these nuclear power plants were automatically disconnected from the power grid.
"The temporarily occupied ZNPP, which has not been operating since September of this year, switched to full [station] blackout mode with ]all diesel generators running. Thus for the first time in the 40-year history of the Ukrainian nuclear energy industry, all ZNPP’s power units were shut down", Energoatom explained.
"A similar situation was stipulated by nuclear power plant operation regulations. The power plants are equipped with reliable security systems, and personnel have the necessary level of skills and knowledge to respond promptly.
Yet this is not a solution. There is a real threat of a nuclear and radiation disaster caused by constant attacks over the entire territory of Ukraine by Russian cruise and ballistic missiles, and a huge risk of nuclear power plants being struck", Energoatom warns.
As of 12:17 on 24 November, the ZNPP received an auxiliary power supply from Ukraine's energy grid. All diesel generators have been shut down and switched to phase rotation mode.
At the same time the power units at Rivne, Pivdennoukrainsk and Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plants are being restarted.
"During the day the power units at these stations will be connected to the power grid when the energy system is ready. Power supplies for the needs of our citizens and economy will be resumed," the company reports.
