During the briefing, Peskov was also asked to comment on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s statement about Moscow not wanting peace but seeking negotiations with Ukraine in order to take a pause and rest. He replied: "Russia wants to achieve its goals, and it will achieve them".

Background:

  • Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin called this invasion "a special operation" for the demilitarisation of a neighbouring country that was allegedly threatening Russia’s security.
  • On 25 February, Putin also called on Ukrainian soldiers "to take power into their own hands", as it would allegedly be easier for Russia to come to an agreement with them than with the government that "occupied power in Kyiv and took the entire Ukrainian people hostage".
  • In June, Putin stated that the goals of the so-called "special operation" had not changed and that the Russian troops were allegedly achieving their goals in the war against Ukraine.
  • Dmitry Peskov, Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, said that negotiations with Ukraine would have to wait for a change in the stance taken by the current President of the country, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, or for his successor.
  • On 11 November, Dmitry Peskov stated that the goals of the so-called "special operation", which is, in fact, the war, could be achieved through peaceful negotiations with Ukraine.
