Russia calls on other nuclear states not to limit its interests in order to avoid nuclear war

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation made a statement on Wednesday, 2 November, calling on other members of the "nuclear club" [countries that possess nuclear weapons - ed.] to avoid direct confrontation because of "dangerous attempts to limit vital interests".

The Russian Foreign Ministry claims that the state’s activities "are strictly and consistently guided by the tenet of the inadmissibility of a nuclear war, in which there can be no winners and which should never be unleashed," and that the conditions of a possible nuclear strike "are clearly defined, have a purely defensive nature and do not allow for an expansive interpretation".

"A response with the use of nuclear weapons is hypothetically allowed by Russia only in response to aggression carried out with the use of WMD (weapons of mass destruction) or aggression with the use of conventional weapons, when the very existence of the state is threatened," the statement said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry claims that in the current situation, which "resulted from irresponsible and shameless actions aimed at undermining our national security", the primary task is to prevent any military confrontations between nuclear states.

"We call on the other five nuclear-weapon states to demonstrate their readiness to work on this priority task and to abandon dangerous attempts to limit each other's vital interests, balancing on the brink of direct armed conflict and encouraging provocations with WMD, which can lead to catastrophic consequences," the ministry concluded.

Earlier on Wednesday, 2 November, The New York Times reported that senior Russian military leaders had recently discussed when and how Moscow might use tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine, contributing to heightened concern in Washington and allied capitals.

In response, White House spokesman John Kirby has said that the United States does not see any signs that Russia is making preparations to use nuclear weapons.
