Traitors: Medvedev supports bringing back death penalty for Russians

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, has once again spoken in favour of abolishing the moratorium on the death penalty in Russia, specifically for "traitors".

Details: According to Medvedev, "yellow-blue [pro-Ukrainian - ed.] saboteurs" who do not agree with the policies of the Russian Federation have started to operate in Russia: "We’ve taken in these freaks, given them the opportunity to get an education. And in return [we get] terrorist attacks and sabotage."

He says Russians who set military enlistment offices on fire and cause damage to other state facilities can be equated to them.

Quote: "There was only one sentence for such wretches [during the Second World War - ed.] - execution without trial. On the spot. Because if you are a traitor who committed such a crime during wartime, you have no age, no nationality, not even the right to protect your own life.

Under the current Constitution, the moratorium on the death penalty may be abolished if necessary, providing the Constitutional Court of Russia amends its legal positions [on this matter – ed.]. This is a question of choosing the means to protect the interests of our people, state and society."

Background:

  • There is a moratorium on the death penalty in Russia. However, the Russian Federation has withdrawn from the Council of Europe and ceased to be a party to the European Convention on Human Rights. Thus, there are no restrictions on the restoration of the death penalty.
  • Medvedev spoke about the possibility of bringing back the death penalty in Russia on 26 February.
