Zelenskyy concerned over US Congressmen’s statements about support for Ukraine

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed concern over recent "ambiguous statements" regarding support for Ukraine from certain US lawmakers. He has said he hopes to retain bipartisan support in the US.

Quote from Zelenskyy: "We are grateful for the bipartisan support. We would really like for this bipartisan support to stay in place following the elections. Republicans in particular made ambiguous statements in American media…regarding having to be careful with respect to supporting Ukraine and the possibility that this support could reduce over time. This is a very worrying signal for us."

Details: Zelenskyy explained that strong support from the US is vital for preserving the unity of the West.

"Each time the US gives us financial aid, Europe does so as well. And we feel its impact very strongly. The victory in this war over the Russian terror is possible only if we have a united front of support," he said.

Earlier House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy warned that Republicans will not write a "blank check" for Ukraine if they win back the House majority.

In an interview with CNN, McCarthy said: "I’m very supportive of Ukraine. I think there has to be accountability going forward… You always need, not a blank check, but to make sure the resources are going to where they are needed. And make sure Congress, and the Senate, have the ability to debate it openly."

Background: On Tuesday, 8 November, the US held midterm elections. Preliminary results indicate that Republicans are likely to win a majority in the House of Representatives, while Democrats might retain control over the Senate.
