Zaporizhzhia attack: death toll rises to 17

The death toll has risen to 17 following a Russian missile strike on residential buildings in the city of Zaporizhzhia on 6 October.

Details: The Service reported that the bodies of 13 civilians, including one child, were recovered from under the rubble of a five-storey building that was hit on 6 October. Another six people were rescued; four of them have been hospitalised.

Four bodies were retrieved from under the rubble of a four-storey building at the site of another strike. Fifteen people were rescued at that site, and eight of them have been hospitalised.

Background:

  • Russian forces fired seven rockets at high-rise buildings in the city of Zaporizhzhia in the early hours of 6 October, targeting infrastructure facilities. Latest reports indicated that 14 civilians had been killed in the attack.
  • The Russians carried out another rocket strike on the city of Zaporizhzhia and Zaporizhzhia Oblast on 7 October. Oleksandr Starukh, Head of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast Military Administration, reported that Ukraine’s air defence shot down three Russian rockets.
