Russian draft dodgers are a threat to Germany and Ukrainian refugees – Ukrainian ambassador to Germany
EUROPEAN PRAVDA – SUNDAY, 30 OCTOBER 2022, 19:27
Oleksii Makieiev, the new Ukrainian ambassador in Germany, believes that Berlin should not give refuge to the citizens of Russia who are fleeing from mobilisation.
Makieiev stated this in an interview for a German media outlet Bild am Sonntag, as reported by European Pravda.
"I am really annoyed by the fact that almost no Russians left their country when the war started. I have not heard anything about massive protests either. I think that those young men who are fleeing from mobilisation now are quite satisfied with the current state of things and just want to avoid military draft. As a result they are driving around German cities in motorcades waving Russian flags," reckons the ambassador.
These Russian citizens pose a threat not only to Germany but also to all young Ukrainian women with children who will then have to live together with these men in accommodation for refugees. It would be wrong on the part of the German side to accept Russian deserters," he added.
More and more men have been fleeing from Russia since it announced partial mobilisation in the war against Ukraine.
A discussion on whether member states should accept Russian deserters started in the EU. Positions of different countries vary drastically: while the German government has been offering refuge to the deserters, the Baltic countries have refused to admit them.
The German government wants to reach a consensus on the issue of Russian citizens who refuse to do military service "for reasons of conscience" on the European level.
Half of the German population is in favour of giving refuge to Russian citizens who are dodging the draft.
