Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev has apologised to readers for an article by his assistant Alexey Pavlov in "Argumenty i Fakty", where he called one of the Hasidic movements, Chabad-Lubavitch, a sect [Argumenty i Fakty is a Russian weekly newspaper, owned by the Government of Moscow - ed.].

Quote from Patrushev: "I apologise to the readers of the publication and would like to point out that this interpretation reflects Pavlovʼs personal point of view and is by no means the official position of the Security Council of the Russian Federation."

Details: Patrushev said that Pavlov's words about members of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement in the article about religion in Ukraine were false. He added that "appropriate measures have been taken" regarding the author of the article.

Earlier, Chief Rabbi of Russia Berl Lazar, commenting on the article by the assistant secretary of the Security Council, noted that Lubavitch Hasidim and the Chabad religious movement are not a sect, but a legitimate School of Judaism. He also said that Pavlov's arguments offend "millions of Jewish believers, including the vast majority of Russian Jews."

Background: In the same article in "Argumenty i Fakty", Pavlov said that Ukraine should be "desatanised" because it has turned into a "totalitarian hypersect", where citizens have abandoned Orthodox values.
