The Energy Company of Ukraine’s right to import was obtained through an open auction for access to interstate power grids, which was held on Tuesday by the operator of the national transmission system of NEC [National Energy Company] Ukrenergo.

"The technical possibility of importing electricity from Europe to Ukraine is another tool for stabilising the operation of our energy system. We must be ready for its implementation," explained General Director of joint-stock company Energy Company of Ukraine, Vitalii Butenko.

Background: In March, Ukraine submitted an application to join the European energy system ENTSO-E and in early June received the right to export its energy to Europe. The first commercial cross-border exchange of electricity began at the end of June with Romania and with Slovakia in July.

But on 10 October, due to Russian missile attacks on energy facilities, Ukraine announced that it would stop exporting electricity to Europe.
