Occupiers steal monument to Potemkin and his remains from Kherson
IRYNA BALACHUK – WEDNESDAY, 26 OCTOBER 2022, 17:53
Russian occupiers stole a monument to Prince Grigory Potemkin and his remains from St Catherine's Cathedral in the occupied city of Kherson.
Source: Vladimir Saldo, collaborator and Russian-appointed acting "governor" of Kherson Oblast, in the broadcast of the Russian propagandistic channel Krim24; Serhii Khlan, member of the Kherson Oblast Council, on Facebook
Quote from Saldo: "We have moved the monument to Ushakov (Fyodor Ushakov, a Russian Empire admiral – ed.). We took to the left bank (of the Dnipro River – ed.) those remains of the reverent prince (Grigory Potemkin – ed.) that were stored in the St. Catherine’s Cathedral. We also transported to the left bank Potyomkin, Suvorov and Margelov themselves (monuments – ed.). These are the sanctuaries which, I think, must be preserved."
Details: Saldo added that Potemkin was transported so that "he sees not only the city of Kherson but the whole of Kherson Region" and that this monument and others will be brought back in the future.
Khlan published a photo of an empty pedestal where the monument to Potemkin used to be.
Background:
- Earlier, Russian occupiers dismantled monuments to Russian generals Oleksandr Suvorov and Fedor Ushakov in Kherson and took them with them as they fled the city.
- Oleksandr Tkachenko, Ukraine's Minister of Culture and Information Policy, jokingly thanked the occupiers of Kherson Oblast for their help in the de-Russification of Ukraine by taking the monuments to Suvorov and Ushakov with them.
- Also, it has been reported that Russian occupation forces are transferring their military equipment and personnel from the right bank of the River Dnipro to the left bank in Kherson Oblast following recent successes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in liberating the oblast.
