Background:

  • Earlier, the self-proclaimed President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, confirmed that Belarus is taking part in the war in Ukraine, but is doing so allegedly by treating wounded Russian soldiers and providing food and shelter to Ukrainian refugees.
  • Lukashenko also said there is no need to declare a mobilisation campaign in Belarus, although he has been preparing for war for the entire span of his presidency.
  • Defence Intelligence of Ukraine’s Defence Ministry has reported that Lukashenko is aware that the announcement of partial mobilisation in Belarus may lead to disastrous reactions in society.
  • Alexander Volfovich, the State Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Belarus, insisted there is no mobilisation in Belarus and none is planned; however, service in the armed forces is necessary.
