Ukrainian Armed Forces confirm strike on Antonivka Bridge, but there were no civilians there at that time
ALONA MAZURENKO — FRIDAY, 21 OCTOBER 2022, 12:43
Ukrainian defenders have confirmed the strike on the Antonivka bridge in Kherson Oblast, but deny that civilians could have been injured, as they are forbidden to be there at such a late hour.
Source: Nataliia Humeniuk, press secretary of the Operational Command Pivden (South) press centre, on the 24/7 national joint newscast
Quote from Humeniuk: "The propagandists are giving themselves away. They don't even track the logic of their messages. Yes, we are maintaining control [of the Antonivka Bridge - ed.], but I have repeatedly pointed out that we do not hit critical infrastructure facilities, we do not strike civilian settlements and the local population, in particular.
The fact that no civilians could have been on the bridge at this time is claimed even by the invaders themselves, because this is a curfew, and very strict measures are taken against those who may violate it. There were no civilians there."
Details: Humeniuk suggested that the Russian occupiers could have changed into civilian clothes to hide their affiliation with the military and make it look like civilians were being fired on.
The Command’s spokeswoman said that such provocations were expected.
Background:
- Yurii Sobolevskyi, First Deputy Chairman of Kherson Oblast Council, later reported that on 20 October, around 23:00, the Armed Forces of Ukraine struck a crossing set up by the occupiers under the Antonivka bridge in Kherson, but "there were no civilians from the city in the convoy moving across the crossing."
- The day before, on 19 October, the Antonivka bridge and the crossing were inspected by Sergey Aksyonov, the Kremlin’s puppet leader in Crimea, and Sergey Kiriyenko, Deputy Head of the Administration of the President of Russia.
- President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that the Russians have mined the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant (KHPP) dam and are planning to cause a historic catastrophe.
