As a result of Russian attacks on the Ukrainian energy infrastructure, temporary restrictions on electricity supplies will be imposed throughout Ukraine on Thursday.

This was reported by Kyrylo Tymoshenko, Deputy Head of the President’s Office, as well as by the press service of the Ukrenergo national power company.

"Today, the energy system was subjected to new missile attacks by a terrorist country, and by the evening we found a way to avoid imposing restrictions on consumers. But tomorrow, we ask you for understanding and support," the operator wrote.

Thus, on Thursday, 20 October, measures will be in place to limit the consumption of electricity from 7:00 to 22:00. You can find out where exactly and at what time the outages will take place on the websites of the distribution network operators (power companies). There will be rolling blackouts, and the duration of the outage will be determined by the regional power company, but will in any case not be longer than 4 hours.

Ukrenergo urged people to make sure that by 07:00, residents have charged their phones and power banks, and have enough water supplies, flashlights, and batteries.

"The reason for tomorrow's restrictions is the lack of power in the system. We cannot rule out that with the onset of the cold weather, we will ask for your help more often," the operator added.

Tymoshenko stressed that this applies to residents of all regions of the country. In addition, starting tomorrow, the use of street lighting will be reduced in cities.

Background:

  • After Russia began its massive attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure last week, a number of cities began to introduce rolling blackouts. Ukrainians are urged not to use powerful devices during peak hours in order to avoid further blackouts.
  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, said that since 10 October, as a result of Russian strikes 30% of power plants have been destroyed. This has caused massive power outages across the country.
