Quote: "The negotiations were extremely challenging, but thanks to the hard work of the entire team of the Commissioner for Missing Persons, Oleh Kotenko, we were able to recover [the bodies of] our soldiers, including those from the long-suffering Olenivka."
Background:
- On the morning of 29 July, at least 53 Ukrainian prisoners, including those who defended Mariupol, were killed in a prison camp in the Russian-occupied town of Olenivka, Donetsk Oblast. Russian-aligned propaganda media claimed that at least 53 Ukrainian prisoners were killed.
- Mariupol and Azovstal defenders ended up in a trap despite the security guarantees provided by the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
- Ukrainian Intelligence said that the Russian forces carried out the attack on Olenivka prison camp in order to conceal evidence that Ukrainian soldiers had been tortured. The Intelligence also believes that the mass murder of prisoners in Olenivka has been organised and carried out by the Wagner private military company (PMC) on personal order from Yevgeny Prigozhin [a Russian oligarch, close confidant of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the founder of the Wagner PMC – ed.], without the approval by the Russian Ministry of Defence.
