Quote from Danilov, in response to a journalist who said Ukrainian Intelligence has reported that Russia might mount a new offensive on Kyiv: "Russia continues to focus on the goals it set on 24 February when it launched the active phase [of the war]: to destroy [Ukraine] as a state, to get rid of the military and political leaders of our country. Their plans have not changed. There is nothing new in this for us. On the other hand, they haven’t been able to accomplish this [so far] and we believe that they are unlikely to accomplish it [in the future]."

Details: Danilov added that the situation on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border is under Ukraine’s control. Ukrainian Intelligence provides daily reports on the situation at the border.

In addition, Danilov said that Ukraine was taking "certain measures" [to control the situation at the border - ed.], including "an inspection, ordered by the President, of the [Ukrainian] oblasts near the border with Belarus in terms of their readiness to deal with [Belarusian forces] if an offensive is mounted from the territory of Belarus."

He underscored that the Ukrainian intelligence "currently believes this will not happen".

Background:

  • Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. The Russian forces occupied part of Kyiv Oblast but failed to reach the city of Kyiv, despite Russia’s belief that Ukraine’s capital would be captured in a matter of days. In preparing for the occupation of Kyiv, Russian occupying forces even brought their ceremonial uniforms and medals with them.
  • On 2 April, Hanna Maliar, Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine, announced that the entire Kyiv Oblast had been liberated from the Russian occupying forces.
