The world is once again on the verge of an atomic catastrophe – head of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine on the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP
MONDAY, 5 SEPTEMBER 2022, 17:27 – OLEKSIY PAVLYSH
The world is once again on the verge of an atomic catastrophe, and the only way to ensure nuclear security is to de-occupy the nuclear power plant and create a demilitarised zone around it.
So stated the Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Herman Halushchenko, commenting on the power cut at the nuclear power plant.
"As soon as the main part of the IAEA mission left the ZNPP, the station was once again cut off.
The last line connecting it to the Ukrainian power system (the 330 kV power transmission line between Zaporizhzhia thermal power station and the Ferroalloy plant) was disconnected due to a fire that occurred as a result of shelling," the minister pointed out.
Any repairs to the lines are currently impossible – fighting is underway around the station, he stressed.
"The world is once again on the verge of an atomic catastrophe. De–occupation of the nuclear power plant and the creation of a demilitarised zone around it is the only way to ensure nuclear security," Halushchenko wrote.
Reminder:
On Monday, 5 September, as a result of a fire that occurred due to shelling by the Russians, the last power transmission line that connected the ZNPP with the Ukrainian power system was disconnected.
Four of the six representatives of the IAEA inspection team completed work at Zaporizhia NPP on 5 September and they left the station site. It is expected that the two remaining experts will continue to work at the ZNPP permanently.
As of 10:00 on 5 September, only the 6th power unit of ZNPP was working, which supplied electricity to the power system of Ukraine and met the plant’s own needs.
