There will be many more threats: Zelenskyy on Russia's nuclear weapons

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has called on the world to respond to Russia’s threats about using nuclear weapons, because there will be many more such threats.

Quote: "Because there will be many more such threats [with nuclear weapons - ed.]. To minimise them, the reaction should be systematically spelled  out. Even the reaction to words or intentions. So that such military and political leaders are afraid of even thinking about threatening any state with anything – nuclear weapons, famine, annexation, or occupation."

Details: Zelenskyy added that Russia’s threats could be believed or not, but the world had to be strong and not be scared of intimidation by the aggressor state.

The President is convinced that Ukraine can set an example of such changes being implemented in the international security system because it is on Ukrainian territory that Russia breached human rights, captured a nuclear power plant and threatened others with nuclear weapons.

Previously: On 25 September, Zelenskyy said that he did not believe that Russian leader Vladimir Putin was bluffing when he suggested Russia might deploy nuclear weapons.

Background:

  • On 27 September, Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, said that Russia could launch a nuclear strike on Ukraine with impunity, since NATO countries would not take retaliatory steps, worrying about their own security.
  • Earlier, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the Russian Federation should not be allowed to have nuclear weapons in light of threats made by the country to use nuclear weapons.
  • Oleksii Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, said that Russia’s use of nuclear weapons would not deter Ukraine from defending its territory.
