Security forces used force against some participants of the actions – in particular, in St. Petersburg, some protesters near St. Isaac's Cathedral were beaten with batons during their detention.

According to the Russian propaganda newspaper RIA Novosti, the police allegedly began detaining them at a protest rally in Moscow because it was unauthorised.

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin announced partial mobilisation on the morning of 21 September. A total of 300,000 reservists will be mobilised.
  • Members of the State Duma  [lower house of the Russian parliament] and members of the Federation Council [upper house of the Russian parliament] are exempted from mobilisation.
  • Dmitry Vyatkin, a member of the State Duma for United Russia [Edinaya Rossiya, Russia's ruling political party], tried to explain why parliamentarians are exempted from mobilisation. He said that to go and fight is the easiest thing to do.
