Quote from Zelenskyy: "Of course, today there is high-profile news from Russia. There are lots of questions about this. But what has actually happened? What did we hear that had not been heard before?
Our positions are clear and well established. This is the only relevant part: not what is said elsewhere, but our own mission: [to secure] more aid for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, more intelligence support, more support for the Special Operations Forces, more support for the Security Service of Ukraine, for the National Guard, for the police, for the border guards — for everyone who is involved in gradually restoring our territorial integrity.
Our positions remain unchanged despite the noise or any announcements made elsewhere.
And we enjoy the full support of our partners in this […]
And we see understanding not only from our partners, but also from those states that tried to stay away from our struggle.
There will be steps [taken] in support of Ukraine in such circumstances from key international associations as well. So let’s maintain the pressure [on Russia]. Let’s preserve [our] unity. Let’s defend Ukraine. We are liberating our land. And we are not showing any signs of weakness.
And I am grateful to all friends and partners of Ukraine for today's unified, principled, and firm condemnation of Russia's attempts to stage new sham referendums."
Background:
- On 20 September, Russian President Vladimir Putin was expected to address the issue of the illegal referendums organised by Russian occupation regimes in the occupied territories of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts.
- On 19 September, the Public Chamber of the "LPR" and "DPR" (self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic and Donetsk People’s Republic) demanded the immediate launch of a referendum on their recognition as a federal subject of the Russian Federation.
- On 20 September, Russian occupiers in Kherson Oblast, following the Russian-sponsored militants in the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, called for an urgent "referendum" on joining the Russian Federation.
- The Russian occupiers are planning to hold their illegal referendums between 23 and 27 September.
- Putin’s speech that had been planned for 20 September was postponed.
