Details: The "People’s Councils of Luhansk/Donetsk People’s Republics" confirmed the dates when the referendums in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions are supposed to be conducted. Media outlets report that on short notice, Russia also plans to conduct "voting" in the occupied territories of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts.
Updated at 16:39: Yevhen Balytskyi, the Russian-appointed "governor" of Zaporizhzhia Oblast, confirmed that the sham referendum is supposed to take place from 23 to 27 September. Volodymyr Rohov, the member of the pro-Russian occupying administration, claimed that the Oblast could be renamed Zaporizhzhia Krai [like Russia’s Krasnodar Krai].
Background:
- On 19 September, the so-called Public Chambers of the "LPR" and the "DPR" (self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic and Donetsk People’s Republic, accordingly) demanded an immediate launch of (illegal) referendums on their recognition as federal entities (subjects) of the Russian Federation.
- Following the Russian-sponsored militants in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, Russian invaders in Kherson Oblast have called for an urgent "referendum" on merging with the Russian Federation.
- Andrii Yermak, the Head of the Office of the President, called Russia’s attempts to hold the so-called referendums in the occupied territories of Ukraine an act of blackmail.
- Furthermore, the Office of the President has once again assured Russia and its allies in the occupied territories of Ukraine that pseudo-referendums won’t give them the opportunity to legalise the occupation of Ukrainian territories.
