Volodymyr Saldo, the Russian-appointed puppet leader of the occupied part of Kherson Oblast, has decided to create "volunteer battalions" so that residents of the Oblast can participate in the war against Ukraine.
Source: Saldo on Telegram
Details: Saldo announced the creation and formation of "volunteer battalions", which will be then sent to war.
Quote from Saldo: "We will create volunteer battalions which, together with the soldiers of the Russian army, will help to complete the victorious ‘special military operation’ as quickly as possible."
More information: Saldo was the mayor of Kherson for 10 years, from 2002 to 2012.
In 2008, he was recognized as the best mayor of Ukraine.
As a member of parliament from the Party of Regions, he voted in January 2014 for Yanukovych's "dictatorial laws" directed against the Maidan [The Maidan was a widespread social and political peaceful movement that engulfed Ukraine in 2004-2005, and then again in 2013-2014; people protested against illegal actions allowed by the then governments. In both cases, this democratic movement won, forcing the old governments to step down, and new administrations to come to power - ed.].
Background:
- The invaders of Kherson Oblast, following the Russian-sponsored militants of the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts, have called for an urgent "referendum" on joining the Russian Federation.
- Saldo decided to hold a "referendum".
- On 19 September, the so-called "public chambers" of the "LPR" and "DPR" demanded to immediately initiate "referendums" on recognising them as federal subjects of the Russian Federation.
