Quote from Zelenskyy: "A mass burial site was found in Izium, Kharkiv Oblast. Necessary processes have been initiated. There should be more information – clear, verified information – tomorrow.
Tomorrow Ukrainian and international journalists will visit Izium. We want the world to know the truth about what is happening and what the aftermath of the Russian occupation is.
Bucha, Mariupol and now, unfortunately, Izium... Russia leaves a trail of death wherever it goes. And it must be held accountable for that. The world must hold Russia responsible for this war. We will do everything to ensure this happens."
Previously: Serhii Bolvinov, head of the investigative department of the Kharkiv Oblast police, said that a mass burial site containing over 440 graves was found in the liberated city of Izium, Kharkiv Oblast.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that during the occupation of Izium and Balakliia in Kharkiv Oblast, the Russians behaved the same way they did in Kyiv Oblast early in the war. They tortured residents and destroyed kindergartens and schools, as well as other infrastructure facilities.
Background:
- Ukraine's counteroffensive in Kharkiv Oblast began in early September. The Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated Kupiansk and Balakliia on 10 September. Russian forces withdrew from the city of Izium on the same day.
- Zelenskyy watched the Ukrainian flag being solemnly raised above the recaptured city of Izium on 14 September.
