As part of the implementation of the Initiative on the Safe Transportation of Grain and Foodstuffs, a total of 56 ships have set sail from Ukrainian ports over the 29 days that the "grain corridor" has been active. Those ships delivered more than 1.3 million tonnes of agricultural products to 18 countries around the world.
Background: According to the previous update, a total of 44 ships carrying over 1 million tonnes of Ukrainian agricultural exports to 15 different countries had been able to leave Ukrainian ports as part of the Initiative on the Safe Transportation of Grain and Foodstuffs from Ukrainian ports.
The UN expects that the number of ships using the Black Sea "grain corridor" to export Ukrainian grain will continue to grow. Moreover, it considers the projection of 2–5 tonnes of agricultural exports via the corridor to be realistic.
The Initiative on the Safe Transportation of Grain and Foodstuffs from Ukrainian ports, also called the Black Sea Grain Initiative, is an agreement between Russia and Ukraine with Turkey and the United Nations signed in Istanbul on 22 July 2022.
According to the agreement, ships exporting Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea are protected by a 10 nautical mile [approximately 18.5 kilometre] buffer zone.
