It is reported that periodic Russian attacks, that have included the use of multiple rocket launchers, have caused serious risks for the safe functioning of the power plant.

"On 5 August, as a result of a Russian attack on the ZNPP, an emergency protection [mechanism] was activated at one of the power units, and one out of three working power units is not active at the moment. The air-nitrogen plant and joint auxiliary building have been severely damaged as a result of the attacks. The risk of a leak of hydrogen and radioactive substances remains. Fire safety is also at risk," the report states.

As a result of the attacks on 6 August, three radiation monitoring sensors were damaged. On 20 August, the occupiers damaged the overpass used by the staff to walk from special units to power units.

As it is impossible to predict the occupiers’ actions, the threat to the physical safety of the power plant remains.

At the moment, the ZNPP continues to operate to meet the needs of Ukraine's energy system.

Background:

Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said that he is ready to chair the IAEA delegation to the ZNPP.

Energoatom emphasises that if the occupiers suspend the operation of the ZNPP, the scenario of nuclear disaster will become likely.
