The Austrian Foreign Ministry said it was outraged by the Russian official's statement, so it summoned Ulyanov for a conversation on Sunday.

"We are outraged by the misanthropic statements of the envoy of Russia and his attempts to bind what cannot be bound. We are for freedom of speech. But we also have the right to take a firm stand against such inflammatory statements. That is why ambassador of Russia, Mikhail Ulyanov, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday," the Austrian ministry said in a statement on Twitter.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine called on the Austrian government to expel Ulyanov, who posted a tweet interpreted by many as a call to eliminate Ukrainians.

The day before, Ulyanov tweeted the following: "No mercy for the Ukrainian population!" It was a post commenting on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s gratitude to the United States, as the White House approved a new military aid package for Ukraine..

Ulyanov later deleted his original tweet and stated that readers had misinterpreted his initial message.

In July, the Russian embassy in the UK justified the killing of the soldiers of the Azov regiment in a post on Twitter, saying that they deserved a humiliating death.
