The Russian Defence Ministry said that a "large-scale provocation of the Kyiv regime" could occur at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) during the visit of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Ukraine on 19 August.

Details: According to the Ministry of Defence of the aggressor country, to prepare for the so-called "provocation", Ukrainian soldiers have deployed radiation surveillance posts in the Zaporizhia area, and organised training of Territorial Defence Units, Artillery Brigade and other military units, practising the actions in conditions of radioactive contamination of the area.
In Russia, they claim that on 19 August, the Ukrainian Armed Forces will launch artillery strikes on the territory of the ZNPP from Nikopol, and then demonstrate the elimination of consequences of the accident at the nuclear power plant.
Why is this important: Earlier, the media published information that the invaders deployed artillery sites at the ZNPP that shoot at the station, simulating the volleys that allegedly came from Ukraine-held Nikopol.
Background:
- On 17 August UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Lviv where he will meet with the presidents of Ukraine and Turkey. During the meeting with Zelenskyy, Guterres will discuss the situation at the ZNPP, as well as the search for a political solution to end the war with Russia.
- Earlier, the UN said that it could help the IAEA visit Zaporizhia from Kyiv, but Russia insists that any mission that will pass through Ukraine is too dangerous. On 18 August, it became known that the Director General of the IAEA personally leads the mission to ZNPP.
- At a meeting of the UN Security Council, the United States noted that for the sake of security of the nuclear power station, Russian troops should be withdrawn from there. Russian representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya rejected the offer of the creation of a demilitarised zone around the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant.
