IAEA Director General to lead mission to Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said that he is ready to lead the IAEA delegation to Zaporizhzhia NPP (ZNPP).

Details: Kuleba noted that the mission to eliminate the threats to nuclear security provoked by Russia is urgent.

Background: 

• On 17 August, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine is ready to ensure proper control and the IAEA mission can be sent to the captured ZNPP in a legal way and very quickly.
• On 5 August, Russian invaders shelled the territory of ZNPP twice a day. On 6 August, in the evening, the Russian invaders fired missiles at the town of Enerhodar and hit the ZNPP site. On 11 August, Russian troops shelled the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant four times.
• On 11 August, the United States at a meeting of the UN Security Council indicated that for the security of the nuclear power plant, it is necessary to withdraw Russian troops from there. Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia rejected the offer to create a demilitarised zone around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
