Representatives of the government and departments created a crisis headquarters at the facilities of Energoatom, the state-owned enterprise that runs all four nuclear power plants in Ukraine. This crisis HQ can be involved in the event of an emergency at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).
Source: Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko, during a trip to Zaporizhzhia, quoted by Ukrinform.
Quote: "We created a crisis headquarters based upon Energoatom. There are appropriate procedures for how it works. A wide range of ministries, departments, and institutions are involved in this headquarters; full coordination takes place there. It works 24/7 and online, we monitor the situation around the Zaporizhzhia NPP," Halushchenko said.
Details: Interior Minister Denys Monastyrskyy also arrived in Zaporizhzhia to inspect the work of all services, forces and means responsible for radiochemical, biological and nuclear control.
According to him, as long as the station is under control of Russian troops, there will still be danger in the surrounding areas.
"Let me remind [you], that this is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. The danger from any incident here has been many times more dangerous [than elsewhere]," Monastyrskyy said.
He added that Russia is a terrorist country and all responsibility for what is happening at the station, for any scenario unfolding there, currently lies with the Russian Federation. And the Ukrainian side should prepare for various possible scenarios.
Background:
The Zaporizhzhia NPP operates with the risk of violating radiation and fire safety regulations; the Russians fired at a number of buildings, in particular, the fire department.
At the meeting of the UN Security Council, member states indicated that for the safety of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, it is necessary to withdraw Russian troops from there, create a demilitarised zone there and ensure the access of IAEA experts.
On Thursday, Russian troops shelled the Zaporizhzhya NPP and the territory near the nuclear facility four times.
