Frozen war is impossible, but there can be a cooling down period – Reznikov

IRYNA BALACHUK — WEDNESDAY, 17 AUGUST 2022, 12:03

Oleksii Reznikov, the Minister of Defence of Ukraine, believes that there can be no "freezing" of the war in Ukraine at the moment, as was the case when Russia first occupied Donbas, but a decrease in activity is possible.

Quote from Reznikov: "I don't think a freeze option is possible. Reduced activity is possible, depending on the season. And again, modern warfare is a war of resources. Resources, of course, are being depleted on both sides. And accordingly, each side needs time to recovery."

Details: The Minister of Defence of Ukraine noted that according to various sources, Russian troops have lost at least a third of their combat potential, which was used during the attack on Ukraine.

In particular, according to Reznikov, the Russians lost 30% of their elite corps — paratroopers, marines, special forces, and officers and sergeants at an average age of 35. Reznikov emphasised that about 15 years had been spent on their training.

The Minister added that based on the number of aeroplanes and helicopters belonging to the Russian occupying forces that have been shot down by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia has lost "up to a thousand pilots of various levels, which means that the flying elite who can fly at night and perform certain manoeuvres has been lost," and this resource, too, needs restoration.

"Therefore, let's say, a cooling off of the situation from the point of view of combat clashes is possible. I don't see a ‘freezing’ of what people want to call a ‘conflict’, because this is not a conflict. This is war. A war of survival. And we will defend ourselves in order to survive," concluded Reznikov.
