The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) is claiming that Ukrainian forces have blown up electricity pylons three times this month. The pylons are on power lines used by the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) to supply other Russian facilities with electricity.

Details: On 16 August, the Russian FSB claimed that "On 4, 9 and 12 August Ukrainian subversion groups blew up six transmission line poles (110, 330 and 750 kilowatts) used by the KNPP for supplying <...> the Kursk region and neighbouring facilities with electricity in the Kurchatov district in Kursk Oblast in Russia."

The FSB claims that "infiltrators’ actions disrupted the technological process of the KNPP functioning."

The FSB has initiated a criminal case regarding the terrorist attack and is searching for "criminals and their accomplices."

It is also reported that the security forces took "measures to strengthen the protection of nuclear energy facilities."

Why it is important: This FSB statement was issued amid the Ukrainian authorities' claims concerning the Russian forces launching attacks on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and the international community's intention to demilitarise the ZNPP for avoiding the threat of nuclear disaster.

This claim was preceded by the new explosions in the Russia-occupied Crimea: on 16 August, Russian ammunition detonated in the Maiske village near Dzhankoi. And detonations occurred at the military airfield in the village of Hvardiiske in the Simferopol district.

In addition, the Russian media has also reported that a part of the railroad was blown up in Kursk Oblast.
