Quote from Podoliak: "All prisoners of war, in particular the defenders of Azovstal, are combatants who legally defended their country. Therefore, the Mariupol cages are an official war crime by Russia. It's time for the Red Cross and Peter Maurer [ICRC President - ed.] to finally remember their purpose and think about their reputation."
Background:
- On 6 August, it became known that the occupiers began to assemble prison cages on the stage of the Philharmonic Hall in Mariupol in order to hold a pseudo-trial of Ukrainian prisoners of war in September.
- The Ukrainian General Staff reported that all foreign fighters defending Ukraine are combatants. This means that they are protected by the Geneva Convention.
- In July, Ukrainian intelligence reported that the Russian invaders were preparing a fake "investigation" about the events in the Mariupol Drama Theatre, in order to assign responsibility for the crime to the Ukrainians.
- Russian media reported that Donetsk militants will start considering the "criminal case" of five foreign prisoners of war on 15 August.
