Details: Draft laws approving two of the President’s orders (No. 7664 "On extending the validity of martial law in Ukraine" and No. 7665 "On extending the validity of general mobilisation") were submitted to Parliament on 12 August.
Zelenskyy has proposed to extend martial law for another 90 days, beginning at 05:30 on 23 August.
Martial law will therefore remain in effect until at least 20 November, almost the beginning of winter.
Background:
- Martial law was introduced in Ukraine on the first day of the full-scale Russian invasion, 24 February 2022, though the war has been going on for the past eight years without being officially announced.
- The Verkhovna Rada has already extended martial law twice, by 30 days each time. On 22 May, martial law was extended by another 90 days, until 23 August. The same holds for general mobilisation.
