Medvedev says that the EU also has nuclear power plants and "accidents are possible" there

Dmitry Medvedev, the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, said that there are also nuclear power plants in the European Union, and "accidental" incidents are possible there.

Details: The deputy head of the Security Council of the Russian Federation blamed the shelling of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) on the Ukrainian military. According to him, "missiles and shells are getting closer to the reactor of the Zaporizhzhia NPP and to the radioactive isotope storage facilities".

Quote from Medvedev: "They say it's Russia. It's an obvious, 100% lie, even for the stupid Russophobic public. Even the UN doesn't believe it.

They say that it happens accidentally. They allegedly didn't want it. What can you say... It should not be forgotten that the European Union also has nuclear power plants. And accidents are also possible there."

Background:

• On 5 August, Energoatom [the Ukrainian state enterprise operating nuclear power stations in Ukraine – ed.] reported that the Russian occupiers had shelled the site of the ZNPP twice in one day. First, three strikes were recorded near the industrial site, with the Russian occupying forces hitting a high-voltage line.
• Later, the Russians hit the ZNPP with MLRS; a projectile fell near one of the power units where the nuclear reactor is located.
• On the evening of 6 August, the Russian occupiers fired rockets at Enerhodar and hit the ZNPP site directly next to the station's spent nuclear fuel dry storage facility.
• At a meeting of the UN Security Council on 11 August, the United States indicated that for the safety of the nuclear power plant, it is necessary to withdraw Russian troops, create a demilitarised zone there, and ensure the access of IAEA experts.
• Serhii Kyslytsia, Ukraine's ambassador to the UN, said at a meeting of the UN Security Council that Russia should allow an IAEA-led mission to the ZNPP, demine the ZNPP facilities, and withdraw military personnel and weapons from the plant.
• Vasily Nebenzya, the Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN,  did not support the proposal to create a demilitarised zone around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
