VALENTYNA ROMANENKO – THURSDAY, 11 AUGUST, 15:53
The Armed Forces of Ukraine deny any involvement in the explosion near the Zyabrovka airfield near Gomel in Belarus.
Source: Oleksii Hromov, the Deputy Chief of the Main Operational Department of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, at a briefing on 11 August, answering journalists' questions
Details: Hromov was asked whether the Armed Forces of Ukraine had anything to do with the explosion at the Zyabrovka airfield that took place the day before. Russian aircraft have taken off from this airfield many times and launched missiles over Ukraine. Hromov replied that at the moment, the only available information is from the Ministry of Defence of Belarus, which reported that "a piece of equipment" had allegedly caught fire.
Quote from Hromov: "There were indeed explosions at the Zyabrovka airfield, and the day before there were similar explosions at the Saky airfield. Every serviceman of the Armed Forces and every unit would love to take the credit for this. But at the moment we only have the information that the Ministry of Defence of Belarus and the Ministry of Defence of Russia are commenting on."
Background:
- On the night of 10-11 August, explosions rocked the area around the Zyabrovka airfield, which is located near the town of Gomel in Belarus, where people heard blasts and saw flashes.
- The Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Belarus later published its official version of reports of explosions and flashes at the Zyabrovka military airfield, citing the alleged explosion of "one of the units of equipment."
- Belaruski Hajun, which monitors the movements of Russian military equipment within Belarus, showed a video of an explosion near the Zyabrovka airfield close to Gomel.
- A total of at least 8 flashes were recorded. It is emphasised that it has not yet been possible to establish a connection between the flashes/explosions and any exercises of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus.
