More than 38,000 women serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 7,000 of them joined the Army after the start of a full-scale war.

Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar reported about this at the second Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen, which was held in Kyiv.

"There are also civilian women who work for the armed forces of Ukraine. That is, in total, there are more than 50,000 women working for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to the numbers, Ukraine has one of the largest proportions of women in the Armed Forces among NATO member countries," she said.

According to the Deputy Defence Minister, there were two spikes in the number of women in the Ukrainian Army: in 2014 and 2022.

"This is the character of a Ukrainian woman. She herself enters the Armed Forces and takes her place of Honour there", - says the Maliar.

The Deputy Defence Minister said that at the beginning of the war, women in the army faced certain problems. In particular, not all military professions could involve women. However, now a servicewoman can decide for herself what to do there.

Now the Armed Forces of Ukraine have female tank crew, gunners and even a one of a kind instructor in deep-sea military diving.

Also, women are faced with the fact that army life is designed exclusively for men.

Hanna Maliar assured that the Ministry of Defence ‘took a direct course’ to make the service of women in the Armed Forces of Ukraine as comfortable as possible.

A unified uniform for servicewomen will be introduced for the first time in the history of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
