Zelenskyy on MH17 tragedy: Russia continues to sow grief and death

On the eighth anniversary of the MH17 plane crash, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia continues to bring grief to many, but that all criminals will be punished.

- On 17 July 2014, a Russian military plane shot down a Ukrainian SU-25 plane, and a few hours later flight MH17, a passenger plane heading for Kuala Lumpur, was shot down in Donetsk Oblast. 298 people died.
- On 10 June, the last court session in the Netherlands finished regarding the tragedy of the Malaysia Airlines flight that was shot down in the sky over Donbas in July 2014.
- The case at the District Court of The Hague has been ongoing since March 2020. A verdict in the case against three Russians and one Ukrainian, who remain at large, is expected later this year. None of the defendants appeared in the Dutch court.
- Australia, together with the Netherlands, initiated a case in parallel with these hearings at the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
- On 23 June 2022, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) issued a resolution recognising that the Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777 flight MH17 was shot down by a Russian missile in 2014.
