The report of a floating mine came from a civilian ship around 15:00 on 30 June. The device had been found 27 nautical miles from the mouth of the Kamchia River, which empties into the Black Sea at Varna.

A patrol helicopter, minesweeper and auxiliary ships set out to search for the mine. It was located after 17:00, and by around 21:00, it had been destroyed by controlled detonation.

Military experts classified the device as a naval mine of the "YAM" type placed in a combat position.
