90% of Ukrainians want to join the EU, 73% want to join NATO ‒ survey

The overwhelming majority of Ukrainians want Ukraine to become a member of the European Union and NATO.

Details: The majority of respondents – 73% – support the move to join NATO. In the South and East of Ukraine, these percentages sit at 65% and 59%, respectively.

The survey shows that men want and expect Ukraine to become a NATO member state more than women. And younger respondents want to join NATO and expect European Union membership moreso than older respondents.

Sociologists involved in the survey stated that in December 2021, 58% of Ukrainians wanted Ukraine to become a European Union member state and 48% wanted Ukraine to become a member of NATO.

This nationwide research has been developed and carried out by the National Democracy Institute in Ukraine. The fieldwork was conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology in the period from 2 to 11 May. 2500 people who live in Ukraine and use mobile phones were interviewed by phone. The territories that weren’t under Ukrainian control before 24 February have been excluded from the research.

The average error for the nationwide sample is not higher than +/- 3%.

The survey was conducted thanks to the financial support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Sweden, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) of Great Britain and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Canada.
