Zelenskyy rejects the idea of a "grain corridor" through Belarus
MONDAY, 6 JUNE 2022, 18:50 – European Pravda
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine cannot consider the option of exporting the harvest by rail through the territory of Belarus to ports on the Baltic Sea.
According to Interfax-Ukraine, he stated this in a media comment on 6 June, writes European Pravda.
"Regarding Belarus: this is open information. We were offered the option to go through Belarus by rail. We even understand what the volume is. But we understand why this offer was made to us. We are not yet ready to take this approach and help our ‘friendly’ neighbours," Zelenskyy said.
He also named the conditions under which Ukraine would be prepared to open its ports on the Black Sea for the "grain corridor".
Last week, the self-proclaimed president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, said that he was ready to allow a corridor for Ukrainian exports through the territory of Belarus to the Baltic Sea if those ports would also agree to ship Belarusian goods.
The Russian Federation stated that they are ready to allow ships with Ukrainian grain to pass through, "if Ukraine demines the ports" and in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. The US and UK have already stated that they will not consider such concessions.
