Journalists from Radio Svoboda have published a video from Sievierodonetsk, where fighting with the Russians continues, and the Foreign Legion is helping Ukrainian defenders in the city [the Ukrainian Foreign Legion is a foreign military unit that was created on 27 February 2022 to fight against the Russian invasion of Ukraine - ed.].

Details: The Russians continue to attack Sievierodonetsk. Fighting is taking place in the city.

According to the correspondent, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are trying to hold their positions and prepare for counter-offensive operations.

They have been assisted by units of foreigners from different countries of the world, who voluntarily formed an independent "Foreign Legion", which is fighting on the side of Ukraine, including in Sievierodonetsk.

Correspondents were able to talk to several volunteers from abroad, including from Australia and Georgia.

According to the young men, they are supporting the right side, want to help drive the occupiers back to Russia, no matter how long it takes, and then return home to their families.

Background: 

  • Russian invaders have occupied 80% of the city of Sievierodonetsk in Luhansk Oblast, but Ukrainian defenders have launched a series of counterattacks and captured six Russian fighters.
  • The head of the Luhansk Oblast Military Administration said that the Ukrainian defenders could move the Russian occupying forces back from several streets in Sievierodonetsk.
  • Serhii Haidai, head of Luhansk Oblast Military Administration, added that Sievierodonetsk was holding out and had every chance of being rapidly liberated [from Russian soldiers who have been attacking it multiple times].
