Shopping centre shelling in Kremenchuk may be tried in The Hague - Ukraine’s Prosecutor General
IRYNA BALACHUK — TUESDAY, 28 JUNE 2022, 10:54
Iryna Venediktova, the Prosecutor General [of Ukraine - ed.], has said that the crime of the Russians who struck the Amstor shopping centre in Kremenchuk could be tried at the International Criminal Court, so it is important to document this case according to the standards of international humanitarian law.
Source: Venediktova from the scene of the Kremenchuk strike on 28 June on air during the 24/7 national joint newscast
Quote from Venediktova: "The (international - ed.) experts who are already working with us have arrived. They have experience of work with our investigators and operatives. And what I told the law enforcement officers - that we need to immediately adopt the standard of international humanitarian law. It's difficult, we are not used to it, although we have been at war for 8 years. But we must meet this standard, because perhaps this case will be considered in The Hague."
Details: According to Venediktova, no-one currently knows what the investigation strategy will be, so the evidence should be collected immediately so that it is "appropriate for any court."
She emphasised that in this case it is important to pay attention to two aspects: firstly, bringing the Russian criminals to justice and secondly, the prosecution of those people who committed negligence or malpractice (the business that did not close the shopping centre during the air-raid siren - ed.)
Background:
- On 27 June, the Russians struck the Amstor shopping centre in Kremenchuk with 2 missiles, killing at least 18 people and with 36 considered to be missing.
