Background:

  • Alexander Lukashenko, the self-proclaimed President of Belarus, has suggested that Belarusian troops may have to fight for the west of Ukraine so that it is "not chopped off by the West."
  • Earlier, the Belarusian government extended the military training exercise of the Belarusian Armed Forces near the Ukrainian border and not far from other Western countries.
  • Lukashenko has also announced the creation of a new operational command for the Armed Forces near the border with Ukraine, the purchase of Russian S-400 and Iskander mobile short-range ballistic missile systems, and even the creation of a "people’s volunteer corps."
