Zelenskyy’s response to European Commission President: the future of the European project depends on the EU’s decision on Ukraine

During the visit to Kyiv of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stated that the future of the European project depends on whether the EU grants Ukraine candidacy status to join the EU.
Zelernskyy said this at a press conference in Kyiv on Saturday, a European Pravda correspondent reports.
"Right now it is being determined what the future of a united Europe will be, and whether there will be a future at all. The European Union's positive response to Ukraine's application for membership may be a positive answer to the question of whether the European project has a future at all," Zelenskyy said.
He said the Ukrainian people have proved that Ukraine’s governmental and public institutions remain stable even during a brutal war.
Zelenskyy emphasised that opinion polls in EU countries have shown that the majority of the population of its member states consider Ukraine part of the European family and this, he said, is fair.
"We are looking forward to the political recognition of this reality on 23-24 June," Zelenskyy said.
He emphasised that the Ukrainian people are aware that candidate status is only the beginning of the path to EU membership. "But everyone has already seen that the Ukrainian people value freedom so highly that they will do everything that is necessary for Ukraine's European integration. The European project cannot be completed without us," Zelenskyy said.
