Russians exploit greater artillery range to shell Mykolaiv – mayor
Roman Petrenko – Friday, 10 June 2022, 11:32
The mayor of Mykolaiv, Olexander Senkevych, has reported that Russia’s self-propelled Pion [Peony] artillery is capable of firing on the Korabelniy and Ingulsky districts of the city at any moment as they are within the distance from the city that the artillery covers.
Source: Senkevych in an interview with "RBK-Ukraine"
Quote from Senkevych: "The Russians have drawn up self-propelled artillery units of the Pion type. Their range, depending on the shells used, is up to 47 kilometres.
They are transferring them from Crimea to Kherson Oblast. Enemy troops then reach a safe distance and fire on Mykolaiv. The Pions are capable of reaching two areas - the remote area of Korabelniy and part of the Ingulsky district of the city of Mykolaiv.
They bring them 10-15 kilometers out of Kherson and, from there, fire within the set radius. Our artillery can strike over 20-30 kilometers - it does not reach them.
However, the Special Operations Forces are taking them out. Several units of these "Pions" have already been destroyed. There is information, however, that the Russians are still massing these artillery units in Kherson Oblast."
Details: Senkevych believes that the goal of shelling residential areas is murder, psychological destabilisation and a demonstration of their presence.
Why is this important: Air raid warning are not effective against artillery strikes as these can happen at any time and there may be no time to prepare.
Mykolaiv City Hall is asking people to leave the city or, at least. to move from dangerous areas to safe ones.
Reminder: During Russian troops’ morning attacks on Mykolaiv on 6 June, there were casualties among the population; one person was killed.
