Details: On 21 May, investigators and forensic experts of Kyiv Oblast Police exhumed the bodies of two residents of the village of Buzova. The civilians were killed by the Russian occupiers during hostilities in the Bucha region.

In late February, an elderly woman was killed in her own yard during shelling by the Russians; her 27-year-old grandson was killed by the Russian occupiers in the end of March. Their relatives buried both of them at a local cemetery.

To date, the police have found and examined the bodies of 1,290 civilians killed during hostilities in Kyiv Oblast.

Police officers continue to investigate the war crimes committed by the Russian occupiers.

Background:

  • In early April, the Ukrainian Armed Forces liberated Kyiv Oblast from the Russian occupiers. Multiple instances of war crimes and atrocities committed by the Russian troops began to come to light.
  • Dozens of bodies were left lying on the streets of Bucha, some of them with their arms tied behind their backs; the Russian occupiers also left behind the bodies of several naked women whom they tried to burn. Later on, Ukrainian police officers began to find multiple mass graves across the region.
  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine stressed that the Ukrainian justice system, together with international investigators, will find every single person who had been involved in the atrocities committed in Bucha; he added that some of them might not live to their trial as they will be killed on the battlefield.
