Dozens of Moldovan citizens are fighting in Ukraine against the Russian occupiers, most of them enlisted in the Ukrainian army in the first few days of the war.
According to "European Pravda", the journalists of the Moldovan TV channel TV8 managed to communicate with the fighters.
Moldovans avoid crossing the Moldovan-Ukrainian border directly due to martial law in the Republic of Moldova, which prohibits Moldovan citizens from serving in foreign armies.
One of the fighters said that he arrived in the first week of the war, February 28. Fighters from Moldova were transferred by the Ukrainian Command to the front in the Kyiv Region and were in the cities of Irpin and Bucha during the Russian occupation.
"I saw with my own eyes the crimes that Russian soldiers committed in these cities. I saw how randomly they fired on civilians. I fought them. Unfortunately, there was little we could do, because during the siege the Command asked us not to leave the place where we were, so as not to be exposed and not endanger the lives of other colleagues," he said.
According to him, among the Moldovans fighting in Ukraine there are people of different ages, from 20 to 60 years old. "We have come here to protect Moldova so that it does not become the next target," the Moldovan added.
Now the Moldovans serving in the Ukrainian army are in Kyiv and are preparing to move to the east, where fierce fighting is expected in the coming weeks.
Recall that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, arrived in Bucha on 8 April together with the High Representative of the EU, Josep Borrell, and the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Eduard Heger.
Earlier it was reported that the EU will allocate 7.5 million euros for the investigation that Ukraine is conducting in connection with war crimes in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha and other cities.
