Quote: "From the beginning of the war to now– the chronicles of the struggle for Mariupol by the soldiers of ‘Azov’, who have already been described as ‘made of steel’.

The enemy planned to take Mariupol in three days. The Azov Regiment took on an unequal battle with superior enemy forces, which exceeded 14,000 military personnel.

Despite enemy aircraft, multi-ton bombs, being outnumbered enemy forces and naval artillery, the defenders stood between the enemy and all of Ukraine."

Finding themselves in a hopeless situation, the defenders of Mariupol urged the world to agree on the "extraction" procedure, which was used in Dunkirk during the Second World War.

Ukrainian authorities hope to evacuate civilians, and possibly wounded soldiers, from the Azovstal plant on Friday, April 29.
