According to Petr Kotin, Head of Energoatom: "The low-altitude flight of missiles directly over the ZNPP site, which houses 7 nuclear installations with a huge amount of nuclear material, poses huge risks. Missiles could hit one or more nuclear installations, which would threaten the entire world with a nuclear and radiation catastrophe."

Details: Russian cruise missiles flew at low altitude over the Zaporizhzhia NPP in the direction of Zaporizhzhia at 06:41 and 06:46 on 26 April. Later, explosions were heard in the city of Zaporizhzhia.

Energoatom stressed that "Russia’s nuclear terrorism is intensifying, the threat is getting more severe."

Earlier: On 25 April, 2 Russian cruise missiles threatened the nuclear security of Ukraine and the world as they flew over the Khmelnitskyi Nuclear Power Plant.

Background:

  • On the morning of 26 April, the Russian Army carried out a missile strike on Zaporizhzhia; the consequences are being clarified.
  • On the night of 4 March, the Zaporizhzhia NPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, was captured by the Russian military. As of 26 April, it is still under the control of the Russian occupation forces.
  • Russian troops also keep heavy military equipment and ammunition at the Zaporizhzhia NPP site, effectively turning the station into a military base and terrorising the station’s staff and the population of the satellite city.
